From Above: where they take flight and explore the world through the lens of their trusty drones.Fort Purbrook is home to our amateur radio club. A little history: the fort was built around 1860 by Captain William Crossman of the Royal Engineers, completing in 1870. The Army occupied Fort Purbrook until 1925. In 1939, the Army returned, with the fort then also housing the Home Guard Headquarters and the Ambulance Depot. The Navy used the fort for radar in 1947 and as a navigational school until 1968. It is one of a series of forts constructed for the defence of Portsmouth against landward attacks, becoming known as Palmerston’s Follies because they were never used defensively.
