Amateur Radio Knowledge & Construction

⚠️ NOTICE: Postponed!

We have temporarily postponed The Practical Evening meetings for the summer (2024). Builders are still welcome at the club’s FIeld Days/Weekends for support & advice with their projects. Check back here later in the year for new information on our popular evenings.

Back in 2023, Fort Purbrook Amateur Radio Club began a new venture: The Practical Evening. The event made available the skills that the Foundation Licence took away.

Practical Evenings were held once a month at Deverell Hall (Purbrook), attracting amateur radio enthusiasts from anywhere within travel-distance. We worked with experienced mentors to discuss and work on our personal projects. The evenings were club agnostic – you did not have to be a member of the Fort Purbrook Amateur Radio Club.

Some of the projects our builders have worked on (both in group and individually) include:-

Homebrew 4-El Yagi

Homebrew 2m 4-el Yagi

  • How to Solder – an essential skill for amateur radio construction.
  • Building an effective 4-element Yagi for the 2m band – using plumbing parts from B&Q, Wickes, Screwfix, etc, along with some standard kit and tape (pictured).
  • “Kanga” 10W dummy load kit.

  • 49:1 unun transformer for an End-Fed Halfwave antenna.
  • Kit build morse keyer. Kit build antenna matching unit / ATU.
  • Talks on antenna construction, inductance,
  • Demonstrations of HF & VHF Antenna Construction.
  • 3D Printing (designing, slicing and printing).

(May 2024) Evenings are postponed for the time being. We welcome builders come to our Field Weekends and Field Days where club members will continue to assist with projects and home builds. We hope to reintroduce the popular Practical Evening events nearer to autumn/winter of 2024.
