What is Squoosh?

Squoosh is an excellent, free online image resizing app. It runs either in your web browser, or in an app you install on to your device. Using it allows you to reduce the file size of an image (sometimes a significant reduction) without destroying (much!) the quality of the image.

Why use Squoosh?

Services that FPARC use (Groups.IO, Website) costs us money, and we have a limited amount of disc space. The larger the image uploaded to either of these services, the less space we have remaining. Additional disc space costs the club further fees, but uploading much smaller files delays further costs.

Uploading Smaller Images

When using the website to write an article, to create an event, or to upload to your Blog, you’ll undeniably want to add images to your website’s content. The same is true when using Groujps.IO to share, say, your latest results from a contest.

But… using devices such as our smartphones, an image can easily become 100s of megabytes due to the default quality of the camera app.

If your image is of MBs in size, then:

  • Open the Squoosh.app,
  • Upload your image to Squoosh,
  • Play with the settings to get a good-looking image that’s much smaller in size (you’re looking for something on average less than 500 KB)
  • Download the freshly squeezed image,
  • Use this smaller image instead.
